CoveView was founded in 2009 by Dan Tredwell, Doug Traver and Tom Canning. Our partners average more than 30 years of experience in private equity, syndicated and leveraged finance, capital markets and restructuring. Daniel P. Tredwell
Managing Partner

Mr. Tredwell is the Managing Partner of CoveView Advisors and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. Mr. Tredwell has more than 29 years of private equity and capital markets experience. In addition to be being a founding partner of CoveView, he serves as the Managing Member of Heartland Industrial Partners LP, a leveraged buyout fund. Mr. Tredwell has executed, as a principal investor, more than 30 acquisitions, divestitures and recapitalizations. He has managed and implemented complex operational and financial restructurings of LBO fund portfolio companies and, as a lead shareholder, he has initiated and implemented annual cost reductions of more than $200 million. He has served as a Director on the boards of six companies on three continents, and he has significant experience in board-level corporate crisis management. Before founding CoveView and Heartland Industrial Partners, Mr. Tredwell was a Managing Director in the High Yield Securities Group at the predecessor firm of J.P. Morgan. Mr. Tredwell has a B.A. from Miami University of Ohio and an M.B.A from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

John McNicholas
Partner

Mr. McNicholas is a Partner of CoveView Advisors and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. Mr. McNicholas has over 28 years of experience and has completed over 75 M&A, restructuring, private equity and capital markets transactions across a range of industries. Prior to CoveView, Mr. McNicholas was Managing Partner at GateHouse Capital Management, a middle market direct investment and advisory firm. Prior to Gatehouse, Mr. McNicholas was Head of Investment Banking at The PrinceRidge Group, an investment bank focused on the middle market. Prior to PrinceRidge, Mr. McNicholas was a Managing Director at J.P. Morgan, responsible for its North American middle market M&A business and a member of its Fairness Opinion Committee. Before joining J.P. Morgan, Mr. McNicholas spent 14 years at The Blackstone Group where he completed numerous M&A, restructuring and private equity transactions. Mr. McNicholas holds a B.A. from Williams College, an M.S. in Accounting from New York University and an M.B.A. from the University of Virginia.

Matthew Faust
Partner

Mr. Faust is a Partner of CoveView Advisors and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. Mr. Faust has 20 years of corporate and investment banking expertise. Mr. Faust was one of the first employees of CoveView and has helped build the firm’s capabilities across all product lines with deep experience originating, structuring, and executing financing and M&A engagements. Mr. Faust has completed over 40 transactions across a wide range of industries. Mr. Faust also has experience as a principal investor as part of CoveView and its affiliates prior private equity businesses. Prior to CoveView, Mr. Faust worked at Banc of America Securities, where he was responsible for originating, structuring, and executing complex corporate and asset-backed fixed income transactions, and also previously worked at Wachovia Securities. Mr. Faust has a B.S. from Virginia Tech and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School.

Inoki Suarez
Partner

Mr. Suarez is a Partner of CoveView Advisors. He has over 25 years of private credit, leverage finance and capital markets expertise, and has completed over 100 transaction across multiple industries.  Prior to joining CoveView, Mr. Suarez was Managing Partner at Cypress Tree Capital, an outsourced debt capital markets and advisory provider, which he founded. Prior to Cypress Tree, he was a Managing Director in Carlyle’s Global Credit business, where he focused on sourcing and leading investment teams on financing opportunities with private equity firms and was a member of the direct lending investment committee. Before joining Carlyle, Mr. Suarez was a founding member of Varagon Capital Partners, where he was Managing Director, Co-Head of General Industries and a member of the investment committee. Prior to Varagon, he spent more than 13 years at GE/Antares Capital.  He earned his B.A. in Economics from Fordham University and an M.B.A. from Stern School of Business at New York University.

Douglas V. Traver
Senior Advisor

Mr. Traver has over 30 years of corporate and investment banking experience. Prior to founding CoveView, he spent 27 years with J.P. Morgan and its predecessor firms. At J.P. Morgan, he was most recently Co-Head of the Syndicated and Leveraged Finance Group. He has extensive experience in originating, structuring and underwriting leveraged loan and high yield securities transactions. Mr. Traver was a member of the Regional Underwriting Committee which approved all U.S. originated loan and high yield bond transactions for the firm. Previously, Mr. Traver was Co-Chairman of the Financial Sponsor Group with responsibility for managing the senior relationships and investment banking coverage of a number of large and mid-size private equity firms. In this capacity, he assisted clients in identifying attractive investment opportunities, structured and arranged debt financing for leveraged buyouts and acquisitions, and originated M&A advisory and equity mandates. Prior to that, he was a Managing Director in the Global Syndicated Finance group where he was the lead transactor for many of J.P. Morgan’s largest and most complex leveraged loan transactions. Mr. Traver has a B.A. from Brown University.

Thomas Canning
Senior Advisor

Mr. Canning has 27 years of experience with J.P. Morgan and its predecessor firms and is a founding partner of CoveView. At J.P. Morgan, he was most recently a Managing Director in the Restructuring Group. He has extensive experience in restructuring-related capital markets transactions, including rescue, DIP and exit financings, for companies in circumstances that are stressed, distressed or in Chapter 11. Previously, Mr. Canning was Co-Head of Credit Risk Management for Europe, where he was responsible for the workout function, among others. Before that, he served as Co-Head of Credit Origination for Europe, and as a Senior Partner and Team Leader in Global Syndicated Finance (New York), where he gained extensive experience in structuring and underwriting complex loan transactions. He began his career as a corporate lender at a predecessor firm of J.P. Morgan. He was an Assistant Vice President at Integrated Resources Inc. from 1986 to 1988. Mr. Canning has a B.A. from Fordham University and an M.B.A. from the University of Toronto.

Nils Nilsen
Senior Managing Director

Mr. Nilsen has over 30 years of broad Investment Banking experience, during which he has initiated and closed more than 200 M&A, high yield, capital raising and other transactions. He started his career in M&A at American Can Corporation, where he became the youngest Corporate VP in this Fortune 100 company’s history. He next moved to Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette, where he started up the firm’s M&A Business Development Group and later managed the Private Equity coverage group. He later became a founding partner at Sagent Advisors and the firm’s leading business producer. He has also been affiliated with several other firms involved in M&A, Leveraged Finance, Private Equity, and other banking activities. Mr. Nilsen received a B.A. from Harvard College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

John Laws
Managing Director

Mr. Laws is a Managing Director of CoveView Advisors. He has over 20 years of leverage finance, capital markets, and investment banking experience, completing over 75 transactions across a wide range of industries. Prior to CoveView, Mr. Laws was a senior banker at Lincoln International, originating and executing private debt placements for private equity clients. Before joining Lincoln, Mr. Laws worked at Antares/GE Capital, structuring, and executing middle market financing opportunities and supporting GE’s sponsor finance unitranche program. Mr. Laws holds a B.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin and an M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business.

Ken Fontaine
Director

Mr. Fontaine has over 15 years combined experience in corporate finance, investment banking, and public accounting. Prior to joining CoveView, Mr. Fontaine was a Vice President at Huron Transaction Advisory, the investment banking affiliate of Huron Consulting Group. He advised on numerous transactions including both in- and out-of-court mergers and acquisitions, capital raising, and debt and equity restructurings. Prior to that, Mr. Fontaine was a Senior Associate at KPMG in their Audit practice. He holds a B.B.A. from Loyola Maryland University.

Suzanne Steimel
Controller

Suzanne has over 20 years of financial and public accounting experience. Prior to joining CoveView, Suzanne was a Controller at a private equity firm and a Vice President in Citigroup’s Commercial Business Group. She started her career in Finance at the accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche LLP. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Fairfield University and is a CPA.
